Ballerina is an upcoming English-language French-Canadian 3D computer-animated musical fantasy adventure film. It is co-directed by Eric Summer and Éric Warin. The screenplay is written by Summer, Carol Noble and Laurent Zeitoun.
Set in 1879, Félicie, a poor orphan girl who dreams of becoming a ballerina, but lacks any formal training, leaves rural Brittany and goes to Paris, where she assumes the identity of a spoiled girl and becomes a dance student at the Paris Opera. She finds her training, and making friends at the ballet school among her ruthless fellow-students, to be very difficult. The mysterious caretaker at the Paris Opera, Odette, and a young inventor, Victor, help her to face the challenges. She follows her passion and works hard to turn her dreams into reality.
Elle Fanning as Félicie Milliner, an eleven-year-old orphan girl with dreams of becoming a ballerina.
Dane DeHaan as Victor, an aspiring young inventor and Félicie’s best friend.
Maddie Ziegler as Camille
Carly Rae Jepsen as Odette
The filmmakers used motion capture with Aurélie Dupont and Jérémie Bélingard, two star dancers of the Paris Opera, to translate a realistic dance to the animated film.
In May 2016, The Weinstein Company acquired U.S rights to the film. The film is due to premiere at the Mon Premier Festival on October 19, 2016 and to be released in France and the UK in December 2016. A US release is expected to follow.
